Strep Throat

Strep throat is a common childhood infection caused by a Streptococcus bacteria. While it can lead to a lot of discomfort and anxiety, it is also easily diagnosed and treated.

How do I know if my child has strep throat?: Look for different signs at different ages. Many children will have fever, and older children will describe a sore throat. Young children may only complain of a stomach ache. Most kids with strep will eat less, or refuse to eat at all. As people get older their misery and discomfort from strep throat gets more pronounced.

Strep throat is rare in children under 2 years of age. It is not often associated with cough, changes in the voice, or runny nose.

We can diagnose strep throat in the office quickly and easily.

Is strep contagious?: Children and adults can pass on strep throat by sharing food, sharing glasses, or kissing. Older children with strep should be allowed to mingle in crowds, such as movies or shopping malls.

Is strep throat related to the Flesh-eating strep?: Only distantly. A diagnosis of strep throat does not mean your child has contracted the "flesh eating" bacteria.

How do we treat strep throat?: A diagnosed case of strep throat should respond to a simple antibiotic.

How can I make my child feel better?: Children often feel better with an appropriate dose of tylenol or Motrin. You can also use warm tea, or gargle with warm salt water.
