Fever in children is very common, but for a lot of families it can be a source of worry and frustration. Listed below are some common questions familes ask regarding fever.

My baby has a fever- what should I do?: You should contact us if an infant has a fever of over 100.5'.

What causes a fever?: Many illnesses can cause fevers, including colds. A cold can cause a fever for 5 days or so, and it can get as high as 103' or more.

How should I measure temperature?: I recommend a rectal thermometer on babies, and an oral one on children. The ear thermometers may not be reliable in children under 2 years of age.

When should I treat a fever?: I recommend treating anyone who is uncomfortable. If your child appears worn out, is cranky or complaining of feeling sick, then some Motrin, Advil, or Tylenol is a fine idea.

How can I make my child more comfortable?: Children often feel better when a cool washcloth is placed on their foreheads. They may also appreciate a warm bath. Alcohol rubs and cool baths are Not recommended.

When is a fever dangerous?: If your child's fever stays above 105' you should contact us. If an infant has a fever over 100.5' you should also contact us.
