AcneAlmost everyone has bad skin at some point in their life. For many people their acne is pretty mild, but for some it can be irritating, embarrassing, or even leave scars. We can help out. I eat a lot of junk food. Is that going to cause acne?: Eating junk food will not make your skin break out. Long hair and face-washing (or Not face washing) don't have any effect either. I recommend that people eat well because it's generally healthy, and wash because it's helpful socially, but neither is going to effect your skin. What does cause acne then?: Many athletes find they break out under helmet padding. For everyone else acne is a result of changes going on within the body- changes that are generally necessary in the process of growing up. How can I treat my skin?: Other than basic hygiene, any cream with benzoyl peroxide is a good place to start. These are available over the counter. Benzoyl peroxide is fairly effective, and it makes sense to try it before getting a more expensive prescription. Can I do anything else at home?: Benzoyl peroxide is the only over-the-counter medicine that will help acne. Alcohol rubs, lotions, and creams won't help, and the alcohol may dry your skin out. The benzoyl peroxide isn't working. What next?: We can offer a number of topical medicines and pills. We try to start with the most simple, mild treatment and work up from there. Fortunately there are a lot of safe, simple options available. What is Accutane?: Accutane is a very effective, but very strong treatment. It's a good idea for people who have tried all the other options. For people who have explored other ways to control their acne, Accutane can be very helpful. |
